Who's playing here again? Niall, Billy, Liam and I? Anyone got the ability to set up a server? Got it working again here. I could probably do something along these lines, but i'm moving into a new gaff shortly and don't know what my internet capabilities are yet (since i don't have it sorted out yet). also I can't run anywhere even close to 24/7, since the laptop freezes if left alone for more than 1 hour usually, and provided a shockingly bad experience the last time i tried it.
So, the other idea is if anyone knows of a (good) public server that we can jump in on, it'd be good.

I might be able to try. I have a very reliable Ubuntu setup on my desktop which could probably take the load. I'll give it a go tonight.

Cool stuff.
Speaking of ubuntu, that's what i'm running on my laptop now too. not a bad OS. it'd be even better if i was a bit more technologically capable.

I can run a server but off my laptop it runs choppy for me also I have to be on to run it, but my laptop is on most of the time so I could usually keep it running. Hoping if I get a job this summer to get a new desktop so if I do I'll have a MC server running for sure

@quill, Do you just mean a lack of Software? Because most tech heads would tell you it's actually far more advanced as an OS (in technical terms) than Windows at least. Linux is like the hipster of OS's, it was 64-bit WAAAAAY before it was cool. ;D

Nope, there seems to be enough software to keep me happy... i'm just not used to using it yet! seems good so far. fast too. so that's fine by me.

Ya, if your not a major PC Gamer or Multimedia Professional, Ubuntu should handle everything you need to do as well as, if not better than Windows. Free as in Beer as well as Free as in Speech too!

Yeah, the only disappointment is the lack of support for some games... with Wine though, its okay. And i still have my old laptop for old games that don't work and emulators.

In a roundabout way. Which reminds me, i need to reinstall HL2 to see if that works. FO:NV doesn't anyway. runs very choppy.

Running modern games on a Virtual Machine is always going to be dodgy, essentially because the VM (Wine in this case) essentially emulates all the graphics hardware, which means you lose about half you graphics and cpu power straight away. That's not to mention compatability issues, bad drivers in wine etc etc. If you want to play anything from the last ten years with anything more than mediocre quality, my advice would always be to duel boot with an XP setup.

So how do you go about running steam on ubuntu? I've a friend running it and he's not sure how to. Do you need wine?

Bump. With this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIeQgwEJUmsNOPE.jpg Also, i'll soon have a 24/7 server. will be testing it in short bursts for two weeks or so, the full time when I lay my hands on a new PC. I'll drop the IP here soon.

Thats one of my worst nightmares. Seriously tho. Ever since I was a child the idea that things might suddenly become animate and try to hurt me when i wasnt looking but only if i wasnt looking has played its part in my nightmares.
